Night Illumination for FavFotoFriday

This is part of  Sandy (of Scribbles and Musings) #FavFotoFriday challenge. I am not a photographer, nor am I aspiring to be one. I just like taking photos. 🙂

The #FavFotoFriday is a WordPress Daily Post approved challenge. It’s simple; pick a favourite photo you took in the last week, share it, pingback to Sandy and use the tag. Despite travelling to Yokohama twice this week, Tokyo once and having mini adventures with my kids, it would seem I didn’t take even one good photo all week, they are all mediocre. With time against me to fulfill the NaBloPoMo challenge of a post a day (6 minutes to midnight here)  I chose one from our Halloween night in the woods of Shinrin Park.

I chose this photo, because I like Night Illumination, not because I think it is a particularly good photo.  Quite the opposite; I realised that my smart phone doesn’t take good night photos. I am new to the world of Android and still have a lot to learn. If anyone has any tips on how to best take a photo at night with Kyocera android, please do share! Regardless, next time I go to view the Winter Illumination, I’ll be sure to bring a regular camera!

Night Illumination at COCOON CITY, Saitama-Shintoshin

NaBloPoMo_2015It used to be that you would have to travel into Tokyo to get some night light action, but nowadays even the smallest of prefectures have some winter illumination for all to enjoy. The displays run for up to 4 months and are really quite spectacular. It has been a great way to encourage people to get out and about even during the coldest months.  It also lifts people’s spirits and instils a little bit of light, warmth and magic throughout the dark cold months.

In Saitama where we live,  we are spoilt for choice this year. I have already featured some of the winter illumination currently running. This week I will show some of the other ones scheduled to start, such as this one in Cocoon City.  Cocoon City is unsual too, in that they have a switch on event, which is one thing that is lacking in some of the winter illumination in other parts of Saitama. This year Cocoon City’s illumination is scheduled to be switched on by the popular actor and model Mokomichi Hayami (pictured below), on November 7th at 5pm. The 3,000,000 lights turn on will be conducted in Cocoon 2 at the Cocoon Hiroba. The illumination will then run daily from 5pm to 11pm until February 14th.

I hope to make it around all the winter illumination in Saitama this year. I have already spent a magical night in Shinrin Park with the kids. More on that later this week.  Do you have winter / night illumination in your part of the world? Please do share in the comments.

Shinrin Park’s winter illumination

Every year, Shinrin park in Namegawa Town, Saitama, offer night illumination in the central gate area of the park.

This year, 2015, Saturday 24th saw the start of this year’s night illumination , called “The Story of the Forest and Lights“. From the 24th to the 31st there is a special Halloween treat, with ghosts and pumpkins displayed in the trees on the walk to the Botanical Garden centre. If you arrive in a really good costume, they will gift you original goods. There is a stamp rally for kids. The Botanical Garden Centre is where the main illumination can be enjoyed. The hours for this week are 5pm to 8.30pm. The rest of the park closes as normal, so you have to make your way down to the central area before 5pm. All of the car parks except for the one directly beside the central gate close at their usual time, please take this into consideration when parking. If you do park at another gate, you must get a “re-entry ticket” 再入園券 as you are leaving so that you won’t be charged for parking again.

After Halloween, the focus is on “Kouyou” 紅葉, the changing of the Autumn leaves colour. The extended hours of Shinrin Park central gate for the month of November are 4.30pm to 8.30pm. However, you can not enter the park after 8pm. The Starlight Christmas display starts from December 12th and ends on the 27th. The hours for that period are 4pm to 8pm.
