88 Nights First Tea Festival | IRUMA

May 2, 2017 @ 08:30 - 11:00

Eighty eight nights is translated from the Japanese Hachi Ju Hachi Ya, a night that marks the end of the cold frosty nights and the start of an important stage in the farming calendar. It refers to the 88th day after risshun which is the first day of Spring on the traditional Japanese calendar.

This date has been used by farmers for the last three centuries as an indication of the time that they can start planting seeds. However, the date is most significant for Green Tea Farmers as it starts the prime season of picking the new green tea, or first tea of the season. The leaves around this time are considered the highest quality.

To mark this important date on the Green Tea farming calendar, Iruma City has a festival on the 2nd of May each year. You can enjoy the rare opportunity to plant tea as well as some other special events such as tasting green tea tempura or getting your photo with some mascots! It is an early morning event, starting at 8.45 am to 11 am.
