– Dezome / Dezome Shiki is one of the those truly unique-to-Japan events. It is a ceremony and festival of sorts celebrating the coming of the New Year. But it is also used as a way to heighten safety awareness. Firefighters put on an impressive show of acrobatic and rescue skills.

Dezome is held annually, usually on either the 1st or 2nd Saturday or Sunday of the month. The most famous dezome is in Tokyo, home to the largest fire brigade in the world. That one is held on the 6th of January every year regardless of what day of the week it is. Kumagaya’s dezome has followed suit and they also celebrate on the 6th of January annually.
Quite a few of the dezome shiki were held last weekend, but thankfully there are still some places you can enjoy dezome this coming weekend. Including at the Omiya Fire Department in Ananuma Cho. The event is scheduled for Sunday January 13th from 10 am to noon.
Approximately 900 firefighters take part in the ceremony and subsequent demonstrations. They will even simulate a helicopter rescue for the public’s entertainment. There will be 37 fire fighting vehicles on display. The police band perform after the demonstrations. The highlight of most of these dezome is the ladder acrobatics. That is scheduled for 11.20 am.
Access Omiya Fire Station
The nearest station is Omiya Station which is about a half hour walk away, but they have free shuttle buses from the number 4 bus stop on the east side for the morning of the dezome shiki.
