Higashimatsuyama Summer Festival | HIGASHIMATSUYAMA

July 28, 2018 - July 29, 2018

Yakyu Inari Mikoshi at the Higashimatsuyama Summer Festival
Celebrated annually on the 4th Saturday and Sunday of July, the Higashimatsuyama Summer Festival combines an older festival, Hachiman Shrine Tenno Sama festival, and a modern twist of it, Tenno Sama Summer festival. Around 80,000 people attend over the two day period.

From the official tourist site of Saitama prefecture, please click to be redirected (Japanese language only).

This year the dates fall on July 28th and 29th. The main part of the festival is at night from 6 pm. This is when the mikoshi, palanquin / portable shrines, do their dance / song fight off! You can see the mikoshi being carried around town before that too. At various stages of the day they also have a children’s mikoshi. There are events from as early as 8 am until 9 pm (but please note the earlier events are usually more for locals and the real festivities don’t start until the afternoon). The area of the festival is from Botan street (Higashimatsuyama Station) to Jonuma Park (opposite the main Higashimatsuyama Library), including Yakyu Inari baseball shrine. The featured image at the very top of the page is the mikoshi (portable shrine) of the Yakyu area of Higashimatsuyama from the official Higashimatsuyama City website.
