Hina Dolls Display at Heritage House | KAWAJIMA
February 9 @ 08:00 - March 17 @ 17:00Yen700
Hina Dolls Display, Toyama Memorial Museum, Kawajima
Toyama Memorial Museum is a heritage home and kura (Japanese edo period storehouse) transformed into a small museum. The facilities are designated cultural properties due to the history, the artefacts on display, and the aesthetics of the former house of Nikko Securities founder Gen-ichi Toyama.
Every year both the museum building in the old storehouse and the residence exhibit marvelous hina displays. There is only one display in the house and one in the museum, but there are also antique dolls on display in the museum. And the displays are magnificent.
The main display pictured above is in the formidable former home of Gen-ichi Toyama. It is protected behind glass so it is actually quite hard to get a photo of it. They must have been extremely wealthy to live in the mansion that is the Toyama memorial museum and indeed to have a dolls festival display of this size. I am very curious about a photo at the site that depicts the family with the dolls in 1938 and there are two foreign ladies in kimono also in the photo. Pictured below.
I will ask at the Memorial Museum the next time I visit, but in the meantime if you happen to know anything about the foreign women in this photo, I would love to hear from you.
