Konan Firefly Festival | KUMAGAYA
June 1 @ 18:30 - 21:30Free
Konan Firefly Festival ~ annually in early June
The 11th annual Kounan Firefly festival Kumagaya will take place on Saturday June 1st on the grounds Kumagaya Culture Hall Pipia. If there is heavy rain, the event will be postponed until the 2nd. You can check for updates on the official website.
The event starts at 6.30 pm. It runs until about 9.30 pm. Usually the fireflies start to fly around 8 pm. There are some rules that you must adhere to during this event. For one; you need to be quiet as possible. Also, you can not use a torch or any sort of light (including smart phone light / flash) when viewing the fireflies. It goes without saying you also can’t touch or try to capture them. One other rule they have is that you bring any rubbish home with you.
Normally firefly events in Saitama are for small groups of people who book in advance to do a tour. However, this festival (and the firefly event at the Terasaka terraced rice fields) have no limit on numbers. With the result in recent years the festival in Kumagaya attracts more than 6,000 people.
The festival is called Konan or Kounan after the area. Konan is famous for the amount of fireflies native to the area. Normally school children in the area make lanterns or candles for the festival to light up the road to the main area for the firefly viewing.
Firefly Festival Access
The nearest train station on foot is Hirose Yacho No Mori station on the Chichibu Railway line. It takes about 50 minutes. You can take a bus from Kumagaya Station to Onuma Park. It is about a 20 minute ride. From the park it is about a ten minute walk.
There is parking for 160 cars at Pipia, but it fills up pretty fast. As you can see in the flyer above, there are other nearby parking lots too. In total though, there is only official parking for about 350 cars, so where possible, it is best to come by public transport.
Events by their very nature are tentative. Please do check with the official sources for any last minute changes due to weather or other mitigating factors.
