May Poppy and Flower Festival | KOUNOSU

May 11, 2019 @ 09:00 May 26, 2019 @ 16:00

Konosu Poppy Fields

Kounosu Flower Festival – The poppy festival that is held annually in Konosu is quite well known, but they also have other flowers and flower events around the same time. Hence overall the festival is referred to as a flower festival.

There are four main points of interest in four different locations. They are essentially poppy fields and rose gardens. The city of Konosu hold different events on the weekends during the flower festival period. The poppy fields have food vans throughout the period of the festival on fine days.

**There are two spellings for the city’s name: Konosu and Kounosu. Although, the latter is the formal spelling used in the prefecture’s website and official document, a lot of documents and translations from the city use Konosu.**

Kounosu Flower Festival Open Garden

The open garden is not just one location, but a number of gardens near the poppy fields that allow people to visit during the two weekends of the open garden festival. You will need to use a guide map to find and visit the locations as they are not marked on any online map. Here is the latest information with links to maps and other information from the official site (Japanese only): Konosu Open Garden Guide Map

The poppy field in Konosu is the largest in Japan at 12.5 hectares. There are an estimated 30,000,000 poppies in bloom. There are actually two separate fields; one in Fukiage and one in the Happy Poppy Square. The California poppies of the latter tend to come into full bloom first, in the middle of May.

May 18th to 26th: Poppy Festival at Japan’s largest poppy field with special events on the 18th, 19th, 25th and 26th. There will be stage and live performances each day.  Last year there was also a small mascot event on the last weekend. That has not yet been confirmed for this year.

Each year they have a date when they allow people view the fields from Japan’s longest water pipe, which is above the fields. The year before last it was cancelled due to inclement weather conditions, but weather permitting it will go ahead this year.
