Kuki Lantern Festival / Tenno Festival | KUKI
July 12 @ 12:30 - 22:00Free
Kuki Lantern festival also known as Tenno festival is held annually on two fixed dates: July 12th and July 18th. It is the biggest lantern festival in the Kanto region (area around Tokyo).
The festival starts just after noon on both days and goes until 10 pm. The main action, the dancing of the lantern floats, is usually on around 8 pm at the Kuki Station’s west rotary.
About 250,000 people attend this festival that celebrates local folklore and is famous throughout Japan. It is said the festival started after a volcano eruption over 230 years ago impacted the region. The Kuki locals banded together to lift the spirits of people in their city and indeed the kanto region.
Huge floats of paper lanterns are carried through the town. What makes them extra special is that they transform between day and night. During the day the floats depict mythical characters which are removed at night and replaced with lanterns.
There are approximately 100 festival stalls on the 12th and 300 on the 18th.
