Downtown Sparkler Festival | KAWAGOE
August 24 @ 17:30 - 20:30Free
Sparkler festival Kawagoe downtown tourist area. Sparklers are handheld fireworks.
This is actually a first for me. In 11 years of sharing events happening in Saitama I don’t think I’ve ever seen a sparkler festival before. But it makes so much sense. It sounds like a lot of fun too and something that could become a trend. I’m very excited that this particular festival is within commutable distance and I hope to attend and write a report.
Kawagoe has really pushed out the boat when it comes to coming up with innovative ways to keep its tourist trade up. This year they are pushing Kawagoe as a night as well as day destination. Kawagoe has long been popular as a place to visit during the day. And very many years it has had to be a day return trip as there were few places to stay. But over the last three years the number of hotels and suitable accommodation have multiplied. In return, the number of night time attractions have increased.
Kawagoe used to be pretty dismal at night, but it has improved over the last year. One place though that has offered a nightscape for the last five years is Kawagoe Hikawa Shrine. If you are in Kawagoe at night before the summer is out and before 9 pm, I highly recommend popping by the shrine to see the wind chimes at night with the small brook and other areas lit up.
Sparkler Festival Kawagoe
The sparkler festival is just one of several night time events organised by the Kawagoe City hall this year. For the summer period, between July 6th and September 8th, there are more than a dozen night events to chose from. The sparkler festival is on Saturday August 24th from 5.30 pm to 8.30 pm.
The specifics of the festival are not yet known, but I am assuming it involves a couple (or couple of thousand !?) sparklers. The main area for this event is around Renkeiji just before Ichibangai on the main tourist strip. There will be a selection of restaurants and cafes open late for the event:
The festival is about a 8 minute walk from Seibu Hon Kawagoe and Tobu Tojo Kawagoeshi stations. And about 13 minutes from JR and Tobu Tojo Kawagoe stations.
Coin parking available in the area. Prices vary according to location.
