Spring Yabusame | MOROYAMA

March 10, 2019 @ 08:00 17:00

Yabusame is the military art of discharging an arrow at a target while riding on a running horse. Each year in both Autumn and Spring Moroyama town celebrates this ancient military art form. The festival in Moroyama has been celebrated for the last 950 years.

Moroyama is the only place in Saitama where teenage boys perform the yabusame as a cultural rite of passage during the Autumn Event. Spring is equally exceptional and magnificent with children aged between 3 and 6 years old participating on horseback in the festival.

Furthermore, the event has been  running bi-annually for almost a thousand years. Consequently, it was designated as a Prefectural Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2005. Yabusame was first practised by Samurai Warriors in the late Heian period until the end of the Kamakura period.

The spring event is held annually on the second Sunday of March. It is a one day event, with the main part of the event takes place about 1.30 pm. A young boy no older than 7 years old is paraded through the grounds of the shrine on horseback. He is dressed in a traditional costume much like a little warrior doll.

In both spring and autumn, the sacred young boys shoot at targets with arrows imparted with divining power. In Spring only one arrow is shot.

Also in Moroyama: a hot spring and spa with great indoor glamping play area for kids. And you can enjoy strawberry picking in the area at this time of year.
