The 34th annual swamp festival in Shinrin Park
October 20, 2019 @ 10:00 - 16:00Free
The 34th annual swamp festival is scheduled for Sunday the 20th of October 2019. However, if it is raining the event will not proceed and it will not be rescheduled. They will announce on their website at 5 pm on Saturday if they plan to cancel the event.
The festival involves marsh and related activities, many of which are fun for kids. But they will get wet and / or mucky so it is advised to bring a change of clothes. One of things children can try is catching eel. That event starts at 12.20 pm, but people line up from an hour before. They allow up to 50 children participate in the event.
There are other fishing catching events too for children, but the main swamp event is for adults only. It requires pre-registration on the day, before the event starts. There is a reception desk where you can put your name down if you are interested in participating.
There are other festival events for children such as Yoyo fishing and crafting. They will have some food stalls too. There are giveaways too: including a present of rice for 100 visitors.
The event is held at the Azamikubo swamp near the “undo hiroba” or exercise field in English. This area is near the popular Pompoko mountain which is a giant inflated artificial mountain that children can jump on. Beside that is the Cock’s comb and Kochia fields which are currently in bloom. Although the cock’s comb are past their prime, but the Kochia are starting to turn from pink to red.
The swamp festival coincides with the monthly “free” entry day into the park. The Halloween illumination event also runs simultaneously and at the central gate there is Halloween decorations.
Swamp Festival Access
The festival area is about a 20 minute walk from both the South and central gates where there is parking. It costs 650 yen per day. However, there are private car parks near the central gate with cheaper parking and still within a manageable walking distance of the swamps.
By public transport the nearest station is Shinrinkoen station on the Tobu Tojo Line. It is about half an hour walk from the station. Or you can take a bus from the station. There is a bus from Kumagaya station too that goes to the park.
Events by their very nature are tentative. Please do check with the official sources for any last minute changes due to weather or other mitigating factors.
