The Okegawa Gion Festival has been celebrated for the last 280 years. Okegawa city is not a particularly famous or popular city in contemporary society, but once upon a time it was a key retail area along the Nakasendo Path. The Nakasendo Road was like a highway that connected Kyoto and Edo.
The Okegawa Gion Festival has about 400 festival stalls and attracts approximately 100,000 people over the 2 days of festivities. It is celebrated annually on July 15th and 16th. Both days the festival runs between 3pm and 9pm approximately, with the main events scheduled for between 5 pm and 8 pm.
