CANCELLED Yamada Spring Festival and Fireworks | CHICHIBU
March 8 @ 08:00 - 21:00Free
Yamada Spring Festival is held annually in Chichibu. It is hosted in early March, usually on the second Sunday of the month. The festival is said to mark the coming of Spring. Unfortunately due to the efforts to curb the spread of COVID-19 Coronavirus, this event was cancelled for 2020.
The Yamada Spring Festival is a festival associated with a shrine, in this case the Tsunemochi shrine in the Yamada area of Chichibu. It is popular and well known in the region as it is the first festival of the year to feature festival floats. The 300 hundred year old floats are adorned in what I believe to be peach blossom decorations, but they might be cherry blossoms. (Historically peach blossom would have been in bloom the second weekend of March, although now they don’t bloom until around early April).
The floats are paraded at three different time slots. The first is from 8 am to 11 am, the second between 1 and 5 pm and the third from 7 to 10 pm. During the night procession there are usually 5,000 fireworks launched, although that information has not been confirmed for this year.
Yamada Spring Festival Access
The shrine is a little tricky to get to by public transport. The nearest station as the crow flies is Onohara station, but there is no direct route to the station so you are probably better off getting off at Chichibu Station. The shrine is about a 50 minute walk from the station or you can get a bus bound for Minano and get off athe bus stop called Gakko Mae「学校前」.
By car: the shrine is about a 40 minute drive from the Hanazono Interchange of the Kanetsu highway. There is charged parking for about 300 cars.
