Tokyo Halloween 2023

A selection of ten Halloween events on in Tokyo this year. Including Halloween events aimed at children, ones aimed at adults and Halloween events that can be enjoyed by all! 1. Futako Tamagawa Halloween Party

Futako Tamagawa Halloween Party 2023 TOkyo

First held in 2015 the Futakotamagawa Halloween party can be enjoyed by both children and adults. Approximately 190,000 people visited in 2022. This year, the event will be held with the subtitle “Welcome to a mysterious world.” They have photo spots where you can take photos at the entrance to a mysterious world, and they are planning a stamp rally where parents and children can travel through the mysterious world. In addition, there will be workshops, hands-on activities, and food trucks on both days.

2. Grandberry Park

Grandberry Park in Minami Machida has an “Happy Halloween” event with dozens of Halloween decorations and Halloween and sports events. Decorations include photo spots with pumpkins and ghosts. They have Halloween and sports events on the Saturdays and Sundays during the Halloween period, including a Happy Halloween train on the 14th and 15th of October.

3. Halloween Pumpkin Parade

The annual Halloween Pumpkin Parade in the Harajuku / Omotesando area is for children under 12 years of age. Over a 1,000 children parade the 1 kilometer thoroughfare. Normally, if you come in a homemade costume a professional will take your photo. There are a number of events held in conjunction with the parade. The parade is not carried out in the event of rain. In 2022 things were quite a bit different. For one, had to pay 1000 yen to participate and secure the ticket in advance. The tickets went on sale on October 16th 2022 outside the Ralph Lauren Flagship Store between 9 am and noon. In 2023, the official date was only decided on September 14th and they say all further information is to follow in the coming weeks. We’ll just have to wait to see if there are conditions this year.

2023 information: The annual pumpkin parade is on Sunday October 29th.


4. Puro Halloween Party 2023

Sanrio Puro Halloween 2023

Sanrio Puroland have a Halloween party annually. And it is one of the earlier ones to start, usually in line with Disney’s start date. There is general information in English on the official website, but for events they only have Japanese language. This year’s theme is Makkuro Halloween Party. They have special events, greetings, photo spots and limited edition menu and merchandise for the occasion.

2023 Information. Puro Halloween Party Starts on September 8th and will run until Tuesday October 31st. Official Halloween event page here.


5. Halloween in Tama Centre

Nearby at the Tama Center there is usually a two day celebration of Halloween. Normally Jack of lanterns, made by local children, decorate the station front and many events are held. They usually hold an opening ceremony the night before too. In 2023, however, things are a bit different. You need to apply in advance to participate in the costume contest. Also, they are not updating the Official website, but posting the information to their Facebook page. Normally they turn on the winter illumination on Halloween night.

2023 Information: Tama Center is currently accepting applications for the costume contest. Closing date is September 15th 2023. Facebook post with the details. The Halloween events are on Saturday October 28th and Sunday October 29th 2023.


6. Tokyo Skytree

Normally, Skytree Town offer a range of Halloween events from mid September to end of October annually. They usually have parades too, during the last week of October. However, in 2022 the Halloween period was shorter than normal and there was no parade. In a usual year, there is normally a Halloween Kids Park the last week of October. Things aren’t quite back to normal in 2023, but they will have trick or treat and parades as outlined in the yellow box below. They normally also have limited edition Halloween menus in many of their cafes and restaurants. Furthermore, Sumida Aquarium and the planetarium have individual events too.

2023 Information. Decoration and character greetings from October 6th to 31st. The parades and trick or treat are on the 28th and 29th at 10.30 am and 1 pm. In the aquarium there is a ‘Halloween Welcome’ from Saturday September 16th to Tuesday October 31st. Press release.


7. Ikebukuro Halloween Cosplay 2023

Held on the last weekend of October, this one is more for adults than children believe it or not. It has become immensely popular and is now one of the biggest cos-play events in all of Japan. Approximately 20,000 cos-players turned up for the 2018 event! It is a daytime event held between 10 and 6 pm (4.30 pm during the pandemic) around Ikebukuro station’s east exit. The Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) used to have a page in English about the event, but unfortunately I see it has been removed in 2022. Hopefully it will come back in the future.

2023 Information: the event is planned for Saturday October 28th and Sunday October 29th from 10 am to 6pm. The stage events are usually on between 11 am and 4.30 pm. Official website.


8. Fun! Fun! Sunshine City Halloween Events

Also in Ikebukuro, but more family friendly, is the Halloween celebrations in Sunshine City. Usually from around the middle of September the mall starts to run some events. In 2022, the Halloween events didn’t start until October 1st. In 2023, it is not quite back to normal either, but they will halloween decorations from the 29th of September. Moreover, they will have the aquarium’s Halloween event, “Terror Night Aquarium“, from September 8th. On Halloween day, October 31st, they have a Halloween concert at 1, 3 and 5 pm. 2023 information: Halloween Terror Night Aquarium from Friday September 8th to October 31st, but the main period of the Halloween decorations is from September 29th to October 31st.


9. Tokyo Tower

Tokyo Tower Halloween Illumination 2023

In a normal year, during the period of Halloween you can rent Halloween costumes at Tokyo tower. However, due to the pandemic it would seem that service is currently not available. But this year they are once again collaborating with Naked Inc to bring us a fabulous illumination “fantasia”. Official website.

10. Bakeneko Halloween Parade 2023

Kagurazaka Bakeneko festival has the specified requirement that you dress in a cat costume. It is one of the most famous Halloween events in Tokyo! However, it is the only parade I know of that requires you pay for the pleasure of making an ass – or more poignantly a feline – out of yourself in public! It is 500 yen for adults, but children go free. They’ve a good English web page with lots of additional information.

2023 information: Sunday October 15th from 10 am to 3.30 pm.


Others

Yumenoshima Tropical Greenhouse have pumpkin decorations normally for the Halloween season. Other Halloween events that are usually on, but were not confirmed at the time of publishing this post include:
