Azalea Season / Tsutsuji Matsuri in Higashimatsuyama 2021

April 14, 2021 May 5, 2021

The Azalea (Tsutsuji in Japanese) on Monomiyama bloom from around mid April to early May. In fact, its not uncommon to be able to see some azalea as early as end of March. However, the main / prime viewing period doesn’t start until mid April. Higashimatsuyama have not yet announced whether there will be a festival in 2021. The peony festivals in both Botanen and the “baseball shrine” Yakyu Inari are going ahead, so it looks promising. Incidentally there are azalea at the baseball shrine too. But not nearly as many as at Monomiyama.

There are approximately 40,000 azalea at Monomiyama. They are of different varieties and colors. There are some cherry blossoms in the park too, but they have already turned green. They were early blooming this year, like a lot of the seasonal flowers. Read more about the Azalea and spring time in Monomiyama Park here.

Azalea Festival / Tsutsuji Matsuri

The 8th annual Azalea Festival in Monomiyama in Higashimatsuyama did not go ahead in 2020 due to the coronavirus. And the state of emergency in Saitama at that time. As I said above, Higashimatsuyama city have not yet released information for 2021 (last check April 12th 2021). I will try and check and update again here, but in case I can’t you can view the city’s Twitter account to get the most up to date information.

The festival usually includes live dance and music performances in the center of thousands of beautiful azalea. It is a small local festival, but the park is beautiful particularly at this time of year when the azalea are in bloom. (And also in Autumn too). And while both the festival and the park are small, they are close to other attractions for a fun day out in Higashimatsuyama. The park is located right beside the Saitama Peace Museum on one side and Shoboji on the other. It is also close to the excellent Saitama Children’s Zoo, one of the best zoos in the Kanto plain.

Access Monomiyama Park

By public transport you can get a bus from Takasaka Station on the Tobu Tojo Line. Take a bus for Daito Bunka University and alight at the university and walk to the park. It is a ten minute walk uphill, but double that if you are pushing a buggy or have children walking with you.

By car: the park is on the same road that the main entrance to the zoo is on, route 212. You pass the zoo and Daito Bunka University if you are coming from the direction of downtown Higashimatsuyama going toward Hatoyama. By highway you can use either the Higashimatsuyama or Sakado Nishi Smart Interchange exits on the Kanetsu expressway. Please note that you must have an ETC card to use the latter, Sakado Nishi Smart Interchange, exit.
