Butter making | HIGASHIMATSUYAMA

November 1, 2020 @ 13:00 14:00

Butter making at Saitama Children’s Zoo in Higashimatsuyama.

Butter making at Saitama Children's Zoo

The Saitama Children’s Zoo (also known as the Children’s Animal Nature Park) is unquestionably one of the best zoos in the Kanto area. And as the name suggests, it is particularly suited to children. There are lots of opportunities to get up close and personal with the animals. From September 1st until October 10th you had to book in advance to enter the zoo, but they have now lifted that restriction and booking is no longer necessary.

The zoo runs several special events throughout the year as well as regular monthly and daily events. This butter making event is one of their regular monthly events. It has been running successfully for years and enjoys great interest and popularity. It is normally held on the second Sunday of each month. However, in 2020 on account of the Coronavirus, the event was cancelled for 9 months. It started back up in October 2020. And they the butter making class on three Sundays in October 2020 to make up for lost time. And in November they will have it on every Saturday, Sunday and public holiday.

Butter Making

The butter making class is held in the cow area of the zoo. In that area you can normally also try your hand (very briefly) at milking a cow at their daily cow milking event. However, for the moment – due to Covid – this event is only available on weekdays. The butter making is held outdoors in the covered area where you also wait your turn to milk a cow.

The butter making used to held from 1.40 pm, but the October and November dates will be held at 1.15 pm. If they revert back to the old way in the future it will be after the lunch milking session which is normally from 1 to 1.30 pm, so you could combine both cow milking and butter making while there. However, at the moment milking is only available on weekdays.

Normally you put your name down when entering the zoo: (the earlier the better!), but now that you have to book the zoo in advance, you may need to register your interest at that time. For the butter making, they give you a plastic cup into which you put cream and they instruct and show how to make the butter. You get some bread too so you can sample your butter afterwards.

The event costs 200 300 yen for adults per person. The price went up in 2020. They used to allow up to 100 people participate at once, but with the Coronavirus they’ve reduced it to 50. You can normally get a ticket at the information desk on the way in, but again with Coronavirus they have a separate area for ticket distribution. Please ask when you book or at the gate on the day.
