Icelandic Poppies at Shinrin Park in 2021

April 1, 2021 @ 10:00 April 30, 2021 @ 16:00

Historically this post was about the Horse Riding event in the Icelandic Poppy Fields of Shinrin Park. However, in 2020 and 2021 due to the Coronavirus there is no horse riding events at Shinrin Park. For the record, most of the walking and related events have been cancelled too. However, they did grow the Icelandic poppies and they are currently in bloom.

Shinrin Park undo hiroba where they grow Icelandic Poppies

The Icelandic poppies are currently blooming in Shinrin Park at the moment, April 5th 2021. They generally bloom from the end of March until the end of April. The poppies are grown by the Ponpoko Mountain, the large air trampoline in the center of the park. They call it the “undo hiroba hatake”. It is about a 20 minute walk, give or take, from both the West and Central gates of the park. It is the same field where they grow sunflowers in summer and kochia with cockscomb in autumn. (Occasionally they change the flower program for the park, so there is a chance in 2021 there will be another flower in place of the sunflowers and / or cockscomb).

In a normal year, the spring horse riding experience is on the third weekend of April in this field. These type of horse riding events are popular as there are only a handful of places in Saitama that you can casually experience riding a horse for a short period of time. Zoos such as Saitama Children’s Zoo and Chikozan Park zoo have a daily horse riding event and Midori no Mura in Ogano normally has a monthly event. Please note, most of these are not available currently on account of the Coronavirus.
