Kasukabe Shishimai Performance at Choshiguchi Shrine

January 19 @ 14:00 - 17:00

Free
Shishimai

Kasukabe Shishimai – the Choshiguchi shishimai (lion dance) was brought to Kasukabe from the current Koshigaya city in 1697. It is a lion dance with three performers making up the body of the lion. They play music while they dance and they have accompanying music too.

Kasukabe shishimai

Three people shishimai performances are not that common in Saitama which is one of the attractions of this traditional new year’s event. You can see shishimai three times during the year at the Choshiguchi katori shrine.

This year, 2020, the Kasukabe shishimai will be held on Sunday the 19th of January from 2 pm. It is always held in the Choshi guchi Katori shrine in Kasukabe. Shishimai can be seen at various events over New Years and during January, but the event at Choshiguchi Katori Shrine is only one of a few dedicated lion dance events.

For more shishimai and new year’s events in Saitama, please see the event pages.

Kasukabe Shishimai Image above is from the official Kasukabe City Website.

Featured image (in thumbnail) is not of this particular event, it is just an image of a traditional shishimai lion dance costume.
