Setsubun Kijin Shrine Mamemaki | RANZAN

February 3, 2021 @ 15:00 - 17:00

Free
Kijin Shrine

Setsubun Kijin Shrine is one of only a few shinto shrines in all of Japan that worships “oni” – Japanese demons or ogres. Kijin is written with the Kanji – Chinese characters – of demon and God.

It is not a particularly large shrine, nor is it particularly aesthetic, but what makes it special is its reverence to demons, which are normally considered bad and / or scary in Japan. The amulet at this shrine is a collectors item. It is shaped like the archetypal club oni are frequently depicted carrying.

On February 3rd annually they have a setsubun festival with mamemaki; bean throwing ceremony. The chant they use at this festival is a bit different from the norm. Usually the chant is “oni ha soto, fuku ha uchi” (ha is pronounced wa) which roughly means “demons out, luck in”. But at Kijin Shrine they shout “fuku ha uchi, oni ha uchi, akuma soto”.  Which means loosely “luck in, demons in, devils out”.

Setsubun Kijin Shrine Access

The shrine is about a fifteen minute walk from Musashi-Ranzan station on the Tobu Tojo line. The nearest interchange is also about fifteen minutes away, but by car. The Ranzan Ogawa Interchange of the Kanetsu Expressway.

Information for Kijin Shrine on the Official Ranzan town website.
