Hatsumode at Kitain Temple | KAWAGOE
January 1 @ 08:00 - January 3 @ 16:00Free
Kitain Hatsumode – Hatsumode is the first visit to, and homage at, a temple or shrine. It is a traditional New Year’s tradition. Kitain is a popular place for Hatsumode as the temple is known for family safety, traffic safety, personal safety and healing.
The Kitain Hatsumode is from January 1st to 3rd annually. The temple opens from 8 am to 4 pm for the occasion. On the last day, the 3rd, there is also a Daruma Festival / Market.
People come from far and wide to pray at Kitain for 2020. There is a great buzz around the place, but it really is crowded to the point of shuffling along at a snail’s pace. And you have to queue for everything, including the toilets! There are festival stalls selling food and festival goods and you can purchase Daruma on each of the days, not just the day of the Daruma Market.
The featured photo was taken at Kitain during Hatsumode a couple of years ago. The arrows indicate where people queue depending on what they wish to do. One queue for praying, another to get a ticket for a service, another for purchasing at the temple and so on.
Kitain Hatsumode Access
Due to the volume of people, it is advised to come on foot to the temple during the period of Hatsumode. The temple is about a 20 minute walk from Hon Kawagoe Station and about 25 minutes on foot from Kawagoe station.
