Tentative information for the 2020 Kōnosu Fireworks
October 10 @ 18:00 - 20:30Free
Update April 2020. Normally at this time of the year the Konosu fireworks committee start to plan the annual Konosu fireworks. On April 18th they released a press statement to say they have not yet made a decision about the 2020 fireworks. They are very aware of the tumultuous situation of the Coronavirus. However, they also stated they are afraid to let people down.
The 2019 Konosu Fireworks were cancelled at short notice due to typhoon number 19, also known as typhoon Hagibis. The organizers decided to cancel both the scheduled AND back up date for the 18th annual Konosu Fireworks. If the 2020 fireworks don’t go ahead it will be the second year in a row that there are no Autumn fireworks in Saitama.
If the fireworks go ahead the date is most likely to be Saturday October 10th, following the pattern of previous years. Even though the 18th annual fireworks didn’t go ahead, this year is still called the “19th annual fireworks”! Information for last year’s fireworks below. This year should follow a similar pattern. I will update the situation as information becomes available:
Konosu Fireworks 2019
The 18th annual Konosu fireworks will take place on October 12th 2019. People coming to watch the rugby in Kumagaya will be able to enjoy this spectacular event. The site is close to the Kumagaya Rugby World Cup stadium.
In the event of rain, as happened in 2017, the fireworks will be rescheduled. They were rescheduled for 2 days after the planned date, but if the weather is acceptable and the viewing fields are not water logged, this year they will be rescheduled to Sunday October 13th.
The Konosu fireworks is now (2019) largest autumn firework display in Kanto and one of the largest of the whole year. They normally launch approximately 15,000 fireworks, but in 2019 they are aiming for 20,000. One of the highlights of this festival is that they launch 300 shakudama consecutively, which are the largest type of fireworks in existence. They require a lot of space, so you can’t see these type of fireworks in some displays in Tokyo for example.
Konosu fireworks have enjoyed increasing popularity since 2014 when they set a new world record by launching the heaviest / largest aerial firework shell ever. It was approximately 464 kilograms and exploded into a 800 metre ball of light. Around the same time you can enjoy the beautiful site of millions of Cosmos in Konosu.
Konosu Fireworks Access
