CANCELLED Kumagaya Air Base Cherry Blossom Festival in 2020

April 5, 2020 @ 09:00 15:00

Kumagaya Air Base Cherry Blossom Festival has been cancelled for 2020 due to Covid-19.

The date had been set for April 5th 2020. The cherry blossom festival on JASDF Kumagaya Air Base may be of particular interest to any aviation enthusiasts. This is a rare chance to go on the base and they have helicopters and planes on display.

Kawasaki CH-47J Chinook, Mitsubishi F-104J Starfighter as well as other Mitsubishi Aircraft, North American T6-G Texan are just some of the aircraft that were on display two years ago. They look quite magnificent all year round, but picturesque when back dropped by the 800 cherry blossoms of the air base. During the festival they have paper lanterns adorning the main avenue of cherry blossom trees.

This event, despite not being advertised heavily online, attracts thousands of visitors. If you are looking for a really cool and / or alternative place to enjoy cherry blossoms with local Japanese people, this is definitely one to consider.

If you are travelling with kids, this event has lots for the kids to do. You can put your name down (early is advised) to borrow mini military clothes to dress up in and walk around the base in. They have the military’s mascot walking around for meet and greets. The kids (and adults too) can go into / on various military vehicles including fighter planes and helicopters. They can operate drones too.

You can hanami (picnic under cherry blossoms) at the festival too and there are dozens of food and festival stalls to pick something up. They even have traditional dance performances and music.

The official website and the main military event pages have not yet released the date of the 2020 festival. confirmed in a press release today that they are planning to hold the 2020 festival on Sunday April 5th 2020. In 2019 it was held on April 14th which was the latest date yet. In previous years it was held sometime between the 2nd and 8th of April. It is usually celebrated on a Sunday so I have speculated April 5th as the possible date of the 2020 Kumagaya Air base cherry blossom festival – which has since been confirmed as the planned date.

A highlight for me personally at this festival is the helicopter demonstrations. Chinook back dropped by cherry blossoms in 2019.

Kumagaya Air Base Access

There is plenty of parking so coming by car is no problem. Please note though that streets get very congested as thousands of people flock to this spectacular festival.

The nearest station is Kagohara station on the JR Takasaki line. The base is about a 30 minute walk from the station.
