Metsa Village Christmas ~ A Nordic Christmas in Japan
October 31, 2020 @ 10:00 – December 25, 2020 @ 21:00
Metsa Village Christmas in 2020 ~ Metsa village will run a Christmas town “Metsa Village Christmas” from Saturday October 31st to Christmas Day, Friday December 25th, 2020. During the period of this event, the Winter Wonderland and Adventure Walk event is on at Moominvalley.
The Metsa Village in Hanno opened in November in 2018, ahead of Moominvalley park that opened in spring of this year (2019). Not only is the Moominvalley Park a Moomin theme park, the whole Metsa park – incorporating Moominvalley and Metsa Village – is a Finnish theme park. Where better to celebrate Christmas than in a Nordic village in a scenic rural area of natural beauty?!
Metsa Village Christmas Line up
- Christmas Market
- Seasonal food
- Seasonal workshops
(This Christmas there may not be Santa Claus visits, they are currently not scheduled. Also, there is no mention of the Christmas tree yet. Last year they had both. You can read about our experience at Metsa during Christmas in 2019 here. )
The Christmas market runs for the whole time of the Christmas period: from October 31st to December 25th. The market is in the Metsa hall.
Santa Meet and Greets The real Santa Claus from Finland will visit Metsa three times during the season. The first visit coincides with the one year anniversary of Metsa Village; on November 9th. He will also visit on December 21st and 22nd. For more details in English, click here.
Santa usually visits Metsa in the lead up to Christmas. However, this year he is currently not scheduled to visit. Unfortunately Santa Claus will not be able to visit several locations this year on account of the Coronavirus.
Metsa Village had a beautiful huge natural Christmas tree by the lake the last two years. However, this year there is no mention of it yet. They do have illumination that starts on Saturday October 31st.
Seasonal food and workshops
Last year, Lagom restaurant had a winter menu, which to my delight included an Irish stew and traditional Irish dishes such as roast pork and casserole. The menu is not yet out for 2020 – the seasonal foods and crafts start at a later date. The workshops start on Saturday December 12th and run until December 20th.

Metsa Village Christmas Access
About 10 minutes in the car to / from Sayama Hidaka Interchange of the Ken-o expressway. Parking is now free on weekdays and capped to a maximum of 1800 yen on weekends.
By train you can access Metsa Village from either Seibu Ikebukuro Line’s Hanno Station or from JR Hachiko Line’s Higashi Hanno station. Unfortunately, both are quite a walk to the resort, taking at least 35 minutes on foot. However, there are now buses that go to the resort from the North exit of Seibu line Hanno Station. It takes about 13 minutes and costs 200 yen.
In a regular year there is a bus that goes from Higashi Hanno station, but please note this route has been temporarily suspended. It also takes about 13 minutes and costs 200 yen.Source: Winter Wonderland and Adventure Walk at Moominvalley Park
