Minoyama Cherry Blossoms in 2020 | CHICHIBU
April 18 @ 09:00 - May 5 @ 17:00Free
The cherry blossom season of Minoyama in Minano Chichibu usually opens around the 8th of April with best viewing at the end of April.
The official period for the 2020 cherry blossom viewing in the Minoyama park has not yet been set. And please note that due to Covid19 there is likely to be changes to the usual pattern of events. Normally, you can access the park from 9 am to 5 pm during the period that the cherry blossoms are “open”.
The cherry blossoms of Minoyama have been nicknamed the “Mt Yoshino of the Kanto region”. There are 8000 of 97 varieties including the Yoshino variety which bloom from about mid April. There are also about 250 sakura trees of the Sato variety that bloom as late as early May.
Minoyama is also called the “forest of flowers”. Apart from the sakura cherry blossoms there are many other flowers that bloom in the park. Some roses often bloom in April too. The view from the park is amazing throughout the seasons.
Access Minoyama Cherry Blossoms
The hike from the nearest train station, Minano (or Oyahana) station on the Chichibu Railway, is a long one in the best of circumstances, but particularly now with many trails closed due to damage from typhoon Hagibis in 2019. It would take about an hour and a half on foot. By car it is about 20 minutes from the station.
By car it takes about an hour from the Hanazono Interchange of the Kanetsu Expressway. However, please note that due to severe damage during Typhoon #19 aka Hagibis, in 2019, some of the roads are inaccessible in the area. And to get to the park you currently can’t use Minano Iriguchi Intersection 美の山入口交差点 . To get to the park you have to use forest service road 森林管理道蓑山線 from the Minano yakuba interchange 皆野役場入り口交差点. Please note this is a narrow mountain road and take due care. Official notification.
In the area
There are also late blooming cherry blossoms in Nagatoro. More information here.
Waterpark Nagatoro is also in Minano and it has river activities. If you want to stay overnight they have wood trailers of various sizes. This campsite was also closed due to damage from typhoon Hagibis but they are hoping to have it back open for Golden Week.
Events by their very nature are tentative. Please do check with the official sources for any last minute changes due to weather or other mitigating factors.
