There is no Nagatoro Wisteria Festival in 2020

April 25, 2020 @ 00:00 May 5, 2020 @ 23:59

Nagatoro is one area renowned for wisteria. The area has naturally grown wisterias historically and is referred to as the valley of wisteria. There are about 3000 wisteria trees in the area, with the most famous around the Iwadatami. Iwadatami is also a celebrated natural phenomenon of Nagatoro and has been designated as a special natural monument of Japan.

There will be no Nagatoro Wisteria Festival in 2020. The official tourism website announced on January 8th 2020 that they will be cancelling the Nagatoro Wisteria Festival for 2020. They did not say why in their statement, so I can only speculate it is due to damage from typhoon #19 aka Hagabis. A lot of Nagatoro, particularly areas around the Arakawa (Ara River) were very badly damaged by that typhoon. Many places are still closed and trying to recover from the damage.

Later in the year the Nagatoro Cherry Blossom Festival was also cancelled due to the novel coronavirus COVID-19.

The 2019 wisteria viewing period, known as a festival in Japan, has been set for the period from Saturday April 27th until bank holiday Monday 6th. Essentially the period of Golden Week 2019.

During that period there is only one day with an actual festival, as we know the word in English. On Saturday April 27th, the opening day of the 2019 Golden Week period, between 11 am and 1 pm they have a live performance at the famed Iwadatami.

However, the area around Iwadatami always has a festival atmosphere with temporary food stalls and an old fashioned thoroughfare where there is even a toy shooting gallery. Iwadatami is a stop on the popular kudari line boat ride and, apart from winter, the place is usually buzzing with people at the weekend. It is much quieter on a weekday.
