Amazake machi ・Tofu sashi ・Oibukuro Bow Ceremony | KAWAGOE
February 11 @ 09:30 - 11:00Free
The Oibukuro Bow Ceremony, also called Amasake Machi or Tofu Sashi is a Prefecture designated cultural property. There are three elements to this traditional festival, as indicated by each of the event names; archery, amazake and tofu!
Oibukuro Bow Ceremony
The ceremony used to be held on January 11th each year. Now, every year regardless of the day of the week, the festival is held at the Shimo Oibukuro Hikawa Shrine in a rural area of Kawagoe on February 11th.
People from the neighborhood associations take turns shooting arrows at a target. After they serve amazake (sweet hot alcohol) and a special type of tofu is prepared.
It is just a short festival starting around 9.30 am and finishing around 11 am. It generally attracts mainly locals, but recently it has featured in a few magazines so it might be busier than normal this year.
The Shimo Oibukuro Hikawa Shrine is located close to the borders of both Ageo City and Kawajima Town along the Arakawa. The shrine is about a twenty minute walk from Minami Furuya station.
The Kawagoe Sports Park is very close to the shrine. Isanuma Park is also relatively close by car. The shrine is about a ten minute drive from the outer areas of the tourist area such as the main Kawagoe Hikawa Shrine and Miyoshino shrine. It is about 20 minutes by car to the main tourist area and Kawagoe Old Town. By the Minami Furuya station there are plenty of places to eat and even more attractions even a cinema.
Events by their very nature are tentative. Please do check with the official sources for any last minute changes due to weather or other mitigating factors, particularly with the current Coronavirus outbreak.
