No Sakado Nissai Sakura Matsuri in 2021

March 13, 2021 @ 10:00 March 21, 2021 @ 15:00

Okanzakura Nissai

Okanzakura Sakado – The Nissai Sakura Festival in Sakado is a relatively new festival in Saitama, although the cherry blossoms have been around for quite some time. The event was cancelled in 2020 on account of the Coronavirus. And unfortunately, news came in at the end of December 2020, that Sakado City have already decided not to go through with the festival in 2021 either.

Okanzakura or Kanzakura are winter cherry blossoms. In Sakado City, there are Okanzakura in bloom at the Kita Asaba Sakura Tsutsumi (Kita Asaba cherry blossom embankment). However, as the festival is called “Nissai” most people refer to them as the Nissai Okanzakura. Every year, when they are in bloom the city hosts a cherry blossom festival “Nissai Sakura Matsuri”…

The Nissai Sakura Matsuri was tentatively planned for March 13th to 21st. Normally, on the opening day there are traditional and live performances under the cherry blossoms as well as mascot and character appearances. However, in December 2020, Sakado City announced that, once again on account of the Coronavirus, they will not have a festival in 2021.

Official press release here

In 2020 even though the festival was cancelled you could still visit the cherry blossoms. And many people did. Ourselves included! It is expected that it will be the same in 2021. However, there is no shuttle bus when there is no festival on. Also, it is possible they won’t open the car park. We won’t near until nearer the time. We live relatively near these blossoms and visit annually. You can read about our experience at the festival in 2019 here

Access Nissai Sakura Matsuri

During the course of the festival there is a free shuttle bus from Kita Sakado station on the Tobu Tojo line on the weekends and public holiday only. However, in 2020 and 2021 as there is no festival, there is no bus. There is one bus every 40 minutes and they run from 8.30 am to 4.10 pm (from the station the last bus is 3.10 pm). It takes about 10 minutes on the bus from the station.

By car it is about 5 minutes from the Sakado Nishi SMART interchange. You have to have an ETC card in your car to use a SMART interchange. There is parking for up to 300 cars. It remains to be seen if the car park will be open in 2021.
