Peony Festival in Botanen | Higashimatsuyama
April 10, 2021 @ 08:30 – May 5, 2021 @ 17:30
Peony Festival in Botanen, Higashimatsuyama
There are two famous Peony festivals in Higashimatsuyama. One in the gardens beside Yakyu Inari (the baseball shrine) and one in Botanen park. Botanen park has approximately 6500 peonies of 150 different varieties of peony. Making it the largest peony garden in all of Japan. In saying that though, its not particularly big! You could walk the circumference in 15 minutes. But it is a nice park with a great piece of playground equipment. And if you want to see peonies in bloom, its one of the best places for it.
The park is usually free to enter, but during the Peony flower festival they charge 500 yen for adults and 100 yen for school aged children. The festival is held annually from mid April to early May. However, in 2020 there was no festival on account of the Coronavirus. This year the festival is currently scheduled to go ahead. However, it is quite different to usual years due to the pandemic though. For example, there will be no live performances this year. There are usually some stalls at the festival selling local produce. However, it has not yet been confirmed if there will be any stalls in 2021. According to Higashimatsuyama city tourism website there will be more information on flyers at the festival.
The festival dates for 2021, which really just indicate the period of bloom this year, are from Saturday April 10th until public holiday May 5th.
In January, the park also has a small display of winter peonies with “yukigakoi”, a bamboo made snow guard. They look particularly picturesque. The featured image in the thumbnail of this post was actually taken at the winter peony event in January 2021.
In 2018 they put a brand new playground into Botanen park. It is now the biggest playground in the city of Higashimatsuyama. There is one large combination piece, with another smaller one in front as well as stepping stones, balancing beams and a number of other small pieces.
Within the combination piece there are climbing features as well as a number of slides, one of which is a windy tunnel slide and another a roller slide. The roller slide has plastic sleighs beside it that you can use freely to protect your bum as you come down the slide! More information on the playground and general information about the park.
Peony Festival Botanen Higashimatsuyama Access
Botanen is in Higashimatsuyama, but is very close to the south gate of Shinrin Park in Namegawa. It is about a 15 minute drive from the Higashimatsuyama exit of the Kanetsu expressway. There is free parking in two different locations at Botanen. In total about 330 cars can park.
The nearest stations are Higashimatsuyama station and Shinrin Koen Station on the Tobu Tojo Line. They are about a ten or fifteen minute drive from Botanen. During Peony season there is a special bus that runs three times an hour between 9 am and 3 pm from Higashimatsuyama Station on Saturdays. There are also return buses three times an hour, but between 10 am and 4 pm and the very last bus to Higashimatsuyama station is at 5.05 pm. It costs 100 yen each way.
