CANCELLED AND OFF LIMITS Poppies in the sky! Chichibu Poppy Festival
May 16 @ 09:00 – June 7 @ 16:30
Chichibu Poppy Festival -
The 2020 dates have been set (March 6th 2020) – from May 16th to June 7th. There may be changes due to Coronavirus or other mitigating factors. Cancelled – more information below the advertisement.
The Chichibu Poppy Festival “Poppies in the Sky” has not only be cancelled, but in an unprecedented move they are not actually cultivating the poppies this year to ensure that no-one will come to visit. They have actually completely closed the area to the public – no car park, no entry, no flowers! And related businesses such as pop up shops and shuttle buses are also closed / cancelled. There will be no poppies in the sky this year, 2020, due to Covid-19.
For me Chichibu is synonymous with both great beauty and great events too. The poppy festival in Chichibu is just one of many famous and acclaimed events held annually in Chichibu. And people navigate the crowded mountain roads to witness the spectacular scene of (approximately!) 10 million red poppies across three hectares in an area known as Tenku no Poppy (天空のポピー) or “Poppies in the Sky”.
The flowers typically bloom mid May to early June annually. The 2019 festival dates have been confirmed as from Monday May 20th to Sunday June 9th. The poppies are in the Saitama prefectural farm called Chichibu kogen farm which costs 300 yen per adult to enter during this period. It is free for children to enter. There is no additional cost for viewing the poppies.

By public transport you can take a shuttle bus from Chichibu Testuso’s Minano station to the poppy festival on weekends only. It takes about 25 minutes. The bus comes every 15 to 30 minutes and is free. There is also a Seibu bus that goes every day, but it runs very infrequently – once every one to two hours with the last bus at 6 pm.
