June 22 @ 08:00 - July 10 @ 17:00

zoo reopening and Quokka

The Saitama Children’s zoo is reopening on Monday 22nd of June, but with new hours and conditions as per the “new way of life”! Since its closure there’s been a couple of changes and a new and very special addition to the zoo. The zoo is now home to four Quokka fondly nicknamed the happiest animals in the world due to their infectious smile.

Saitama Children’s Zoo Reopening

Information on the interim hours and conditions of the Saitama Children’s zoo, aka the Children’s Nature Animal park, in Higashimatsuyama:

From Monday June 22nd to Friday July 10th the hours will be different to normal. The park will only open on weekdays and close on weekends until Friday July 10th. It will open back as normal from Saturday July 11th with the usual Mondays off and open every other day of the week.

Between Monday June 22nd and Thursday July 9th they will only allow a maximum of 1000 people in on any given day. That number will increase to 5000 from July 10th until July 31st. Also, until August 31st they are not allowing any groups into the park. Furthermore, you need to fill out a form before entering the zoo. If you do not fill out the form you cannot enter. You can download it in advance on their website here, or fill it out at the gate on the day.

The zoo request that you do not visit the zoo if you or anyone in your family has had COVID-19 in the past month. They also ask you to refrain from visiting if you have a fever of feel poorly.

They ask that you follow the guidelines illustrated above:

  • Wear a mask and practice “coughing etiquette”
  • Wash your hands
  • Practice social distancing: keep a distance of two meters
  • Don’t group together at pens
  • Don’t touch the glass or fencing at pens
  • Expect longer than usual waits

Another thing to note that several of the facilities and the majority of the events are currently unavailable.

Quokka at the zoo

In celebration of the zoo’s 40th anniversary the zoo were donated two male and two female quokkas from the Featherdale Wildlife Park in Australia. Quokka is currently not being raised and displayed outside of its habitat, Australia, so no doubt people will come from far and wide to see them. They are the only Quokka in Japan. The Quokka will not be on display until July 1st. And even after that you will need to have a ticket to see them. Information on the hows and whys on the website here (Japanese language).
