CANCELLED Shimozato Sakura Matsuri 2020
April 5 @ 10:00 - 15:00Free
Shimozato Sakura Matsuri 2020 – CANCELLED – Cherry blossom festival at the former Shimozato school also known as Ashigakubo School from the anime Nonnon biyori.
During the 2019 cherry blossom festival our favorite cherry blossom viewing was at this quaint old school in Ogawa town. There is a lovely organic cafe “Mozart” on the grounds too. Unfortunately the grounds of the school and the cafe were very badly affected by typhoon #15 and then #19 in 2019 and both had to close to the public for a while. I revisited the area and had the great pleasure of attending a special event there after the typhoon clean up. It is a wonderful place to visit all year round, but particularly in spring when the stunning mature sakura are in bloom.
Update the festival that was scheduled for Sunday April 5th 2020 has been cancelled due to the Coronavirus outbreak.
Official cancellation notification on the Ogawa Tourism website.
Access Former Shimozato School
The nearest station is Ogawa machi on the Tobu Tojo and JR Hachiko lines. Not to be confused with the Ogawamachi in Tokyo! It’s only about an hour and a half from Tokyo, all in, if you get a taxi from the station. You can also hire a bike or take a bus part of the way. It takes much longer if you walk as it is a 40 minute walk from the station.
You can get a bus part of the way. From the station you can get a bus to “Ogawa Park Hill” and alight at “Dento Kugei Kaikan”「伝統工芸会館前」 . It is about a 15 minute walk from there.
Parking is free. It is at the back of the school. You go through the school gate and down a dirt road until you see it past the organic farm.
Events by their very nature are tentative. Please do check with the official sources for any last minute changes due to weather or other mitigating factors, particularly with the current Coronavirus outbreak.
