September 13 @ 12:00 - 17:00Free
The rain praying dragon festival of Tsurugashima “Suneori Amagoi” is usually held in August every four years. But this year, 2020, it will be held in September. Reading between the lines the timing was chosen around the 2020 Olympics.
This festival has to be seen to be believed! A giant THREE TON 36 meter long dragon made of bamboo and straw is carried by 300 dragon bearers.
Rain Praying Dragon Festival Tsurugashima 2020
The festival starts from Shirahige shrine, up by Belc on route 407, at 12.30 pm. The dragon is paraded around the area right up to Kaminari Denchi park. Kaminari means thunder in Japanese. The dragon is brought into “thunder lake” and destroyed there as an offering to the Gods for rain. It really is an incredible festival, an only in Japan event, really worth seeing. Do note though, there will be thousands of people there to witness this rare and wonderful sight.
The festival takes place to the Tsurugashima exit of the Ken-o expressway. There is normally free parking at the Belc Headquarters on route 407. The nearest train station is Wakaba Station on the Tobu Tojo Line. The shrine is about a 30 minute walk from the station and Kaminari Denchi Park is about a 20 minute walk from the station.
Events by their very nature are tentative. Please do check with the official sources for any last minute changes due to weather or other mitigating factors.
