tokorozawa sakura town opening in July 2020 insaitama

Sakura Town Shin Tokorozawa is part of the Cool Japan Forest Project, an initiative between Kadokawa Corporation and Tokorozawa city. The development includes a library museum (with bookshelf theater), an atypical shrine and anime hotel to name but three of the cool attractions. And next door in the Higashi Tokorozawa Saitama is getting a permanent TeamLab Art installation “Acorn Forest”.

The impressive resort was originally supposed to open on July 17th, the opening event was pushed back to November 6th on account of the Coronavirus outbreak. The Kadokawa Culture museum will have a pre-opening on August 1st. Tickets are due to go on sale this week. They have an after school club which started on July 1st.

Update May 14th 2020: News came through on Wednesday the 13th of May that the planned July “grand opening” of Sakura Town has been postponed, due to the Coronavirus Outbreak. The Kadokawa Museum was actually scheduled to open before the opening of Sakura town on July 17th. However, according to the press release, both have now been postponed until dates yet to be decided outlined in this post. They have indicated that the museum will be opened between late July and October and have set the pre-opening date as August 1st. And that the Sakura Town Grand opening will now be held in or after November 6th instead of July 17th. Source of changes May 14th: Official press release.

Kadokawa Museum: delayed from mid June to sometime between late July and October. The pre-opening date has been confirmed as August 1st. Event Information here.

Sakura Town Grand opening: delayed from July 17th until November 6th

Kadokawa Corporation (publishers) broke the news a couple of years ago about the major “Cool Japan Forest Project” development Sakura Town in Shin Tokorozawa. All went quiet until Autumn last year and I for one had forgotten all about it. But as the date approaches the exciting new leisure complex is dominating the Saitama news. And information for the museum has showed up in various magazines, such as this one:

The resort was on schedule for the proposed opening date of Friday July 17th 2020. However, due to the coronavirus outbreak they decided to postpone the opening. See the information in the paragraphs above.

Tokorozawa Sakura Town

Kadokawa Musashino Museum

The Tokorozawa Sakura Town Cool Japan Forest Project development will include shops, restaurants, a museum, a factory, offices, a public open space, event space, a shrine and even a hotel. An anime hotel at that.

Kadokawa Musashino Museum

The museum, called Kadokawa Musashino Museum, combines a library, art gallery and science museum. It looks absolutely stunning. It has multiple floors and the library has nine areas including a “forest of books”.

The museum was supposed to be called Kadokawa Musashino after the name of the publishers who are funding the project “Kadokawa” and the name of the geographical area “Musashino”. However, as the opening date nears, they seem to be referring to it as the Kadokawa Culture Museum. Regardless, we will find out in due course. And the museum’s website is now and up and running. On July 2nd the website was renewed. Previously it just had a video, now it has proper information and links.

Cool Japan Shrine

The shrine is a modern type shrine with a name that translates into “Cool Japan” in English!

Anime Hotel

They are calling the hotel an “anime” hotel. That will open later than the rest of the complex. From what I have seen so far, more than the hotel being “anime themed” it is anime and game centered. So you can watch and play anime, rather than staying in an anime decorated room. I’ve only seen a handful of rooms so far though. I will update when I see more! Update July 2020: more details on the EJ Anime Hotel.
