Unfortunate Insects Exhibition, Sayama Museum
June 29 @ 09:00 – September 8 @ 17:00
Unfortunate Insects Exhibition is the next child friendly summer exhibition at the Sayama Municipal Museum. It will run from Saturday June 29th to Sunday September 8th during the museum’s opening hours of 9 am to 5 pm everyday except Monday. The museum closes on Mondays.
In my experience to date, the summer exhibitions at Sayama Museum have been particularly fun for kids. They have been both engaging AND educational for children. We have visited several of their summer exhibits over the years and they never disappoint. I am always impressed by how they continuously bring something innovative. June 30th 2019: HOWEVER! This year the exhibition is a little flat and lacking in my opinion.
Beside the museum there is a lovely landscaped park with play equipment for small children such as preschoolers. There is also a cafe in the same premises of the museum. They sell some delicious snow cones, a great way to cool down after a romp in the park. Between the three – museum, park, cafe – it makes for a nice day out with children over the summer holidays.
The 2019 Sayama Municipal Museum exhibit is called “Unfortunate Insects” with a sub-heading along the lines of “after all, insects work hard too”. It introduces lots of fascinating information about the work and life of insects and bugs.
During the period they of the exhibit they have a Insect Kids Space aimed at children. At no additional cost, kids can
dress up in insect costumes use insect photo props and get their photo taken. They can also colour and or draw insect pictures. Update June 30th: there were no insect costumes, but just insect photo props.
For a small additional cost during the month of August and all weekends during the exhibition, kids can participate in an insect related craft workshop. There are several different ones where they make insects either with recycled materials, or with sand pictures, magnets for example. The materials are included in the price, which is around 300 yen on average (will depend on which workshop it is).
Insect Hunt at Chikozan Night zoo
There is a special event in collaboration with Chikozan zoo, on August 17th. Kids can hunt for insects at night in the zoo under the supervision of museum and zoo staff. There are places for 50 people which will be chosen by lottery on August 7th. The cut off for application is August 6th. In order to be in with a chance you need to send a postcard to the museum with your name, the number of participants, their age and your contact details.
