Terasaka Rice Terrace candle night and firefly viewing

The Terasaka Rice Terraces “Firefly bonfire festival” has become quite famous, within Saitama anyway, in the last few years. Despite the remote location, hundreds make the journey to see the rare and stunning view of fireflies and candle light, or as they call them, bonfires. Information for this special event in 2024 below…

Terasaka Rice Terraces, Chichibu District, Saitama

The Terasaka rice terraces are one of the largest rice terrace in Saitama Prefecture, boasting an area of approximately 52,000 square meters. It not only makes for beautiful scenery, it also serves as a stock of water. Beautiful Terasaka has two large events each year. The firefly viewing event in summer and the cluster amaryllis (red spider lily) festival in September.

The firefly viewing is in early July annually. In 2024 it is scheduled for Saturday July 6th from 6 pm to 9 pm. However, it is not unusual for the event to be cancelled last minute if the weather is bad. Please do always check with the official website, linked in the information section, for any last minute cancellations and / or stipulations for events.

The Terasaka Rice Terraces are a beautiful place to visit all year round. And a really moving place to observe fireflies, particularly as the accentuate the atmosphere with live music and about 600 ‘bonfire’ candles on the terraces.

Please note

The terraces are open to the public by kind permission of their owner for this special event. So please, please, please, respect the ‘no parking on the road’ rule. From July 5th to 7th you also cannot park in the parking area at the south of the terraces. There are parking options, so please use them – I have outlined them in the access section.

In season, the town regularly post photos of the terraced fields on the town’s site: Yokoze Town’s official website.

You can walk or take a bus from Seibu Chichibu line’s Yokoze Station. It takes about 15 minutes on foot. On the night of the event only there is also a shuttle bus from Yokoze station. However, currently the official 2024 event post is saying its only available on July 1st. I’m pretty certain that its just a mistake from copying the information from last year – the event was on July 1st last year. I’m 99% certain that they mean for it to say July 6th only! The bus goes every 30 minutes from 5 pm to 9 pm.

If you are coming by car you can park at the ‘Yokoze Citizen’s Ground’ on the night of the event only. It is about an 8 minute walk from the terraces. You can also park at the ‘Yokoze Community Hall outdoor parking lot’ on the night of this event. It is also about an 8 minute walk from the terraces. In addition, you can use the parking lot at the Buko hot spring which is about a 15 minute walk away. The town strongly requests that you do not park on the side of the road by the terraces, at anytime of the year. Please be a responsible visitor!
