Fukaya Tanabata Festival Saitama

Information for the Fukaya Tanabata Festival – also known as the Fukaya Star Festival – in 2023.

The Fukaya Tanabata Festival is one of the first summer festivals in Saitama Prefecture annually. Several “Tanabata”, aka Star, Festivals are on in August rather than July, as Tanabata can be celebrated on either July 7th or August 7th. Thankfully, Fukaya celebrates the occasion in early July with a three day festival.

The Fukaya Star Festival is generally on the weekend closest to July 7th. In 2023, that is Friday July 7th, Saturday July 8th and Sunday July 9th. There are different highlights for each day of the 3 weekend celebration of Tanabata and festival stalls each day. There are usually about 250 festival stalls selling traditional festival food and drink, as well as some with festival games. Moreover, the Nakasendo Road is decorated with Star Festival decorations. Before the pandemic, approximately 200,000 spectators from Saitama, Tokyo and even further afield, descended on Fukaya each year to witness the magnificent colors of thousands of tanabata streamers.

Event: the 73rd annual Fukaya Tanabata Festival 第73回深谷七夕まつり

Dates: Friday July 7th, Saturday July 8th and Sunday July 9th 2023.

Times: On the Friday the festival starts from 3 pm, but Saturday and Sunday it starts from 10 am. It runs until about 9 pm each night.

Cost: free to enter the venue.

Fukaya Tanabata Festival Access

The Fukaya Tanabata festival takes place close to Fukaya Station (on the JR Takasaki Line) on Naka cho, Honjo machi, and Inari cho. They advise to come by public transport where possible, but there are some parking spaces available if you come by car. For example, you can park at the city hall, but there is a one way system for the days of the festival. They have guards on directing traffic. In addition, there are also a number of coin parking lots near the main festival area. Please do not park on the grounds of shops or businesses in the area.
