Information for the Fukaya Tanabata Festival – also known as the Fukaya Star Festival – in 2022. For the first time in three years, the Fukaya Star Festival is scheduled to go ahead in 2022. Fukaya City cancelled the festival in 2020 and 2021 due to the pandemic. However, they are following the preventative measures of the prefecture and request that you download the Cocoa app or the Saitama LINE Corona notification system. If you haven’t done it before arriving, you can use a QR code provided at the venue on the day.
Fukaya Tanabata Festival
The Fukaya Star Festival is a three day event held in summer annually. The star festival is celebrated on either July 7th or August 7th depending on the region. In Fukaya they celebrate in July and the festival is generally on the weekend closest to July 7th. In 2022, that is Friday July 8th, Saturday July 9th and Sunday July 10th. There are normally different highlights for each day of the 3 weekend celebration of Tanabata.
Before the pandemic, approximately 200,000 spectators from Saitama, Tokyo and even further afield, descended on Fukaya each year to witness the magnificent colors of thousands of tanabata streamers. However, due to the pandemic they have stated there will be restrictions on numbers in place. Unfortunately though, they haven’t specified what those restrictions are. Except to say: “If the venue is crowded and a safe social distance cannot be maintained, the staff may restrict admission and the flow of people”.
Usually there are about 250 festival stalls selling traditional festival food and drink, as well as some with festival games. However, in 2022 there will be no space to consume food bought at the festival. They ask that you take it home. They have also said that if “excessive drinking is observed” they may refuse to sell alcohol. Also, they request that you use a mask as much as possible. Moreover, they may ask you to leave the venue if your seen to be without a mask for a long period of time.
Lastly, media coverage is not allowed in 2022. They want to facilitate the free flow of movement as much as possible, so presumably the request applies to Youtubers as well as Instagrammers! If in doubt; ask at the venue.
