Higashimatsuyama fireworks

The Higashimatsuyama Fireworks will be on in 2024, weather permitting, for the first time in five years. However, this year you need to purchase a ticket in advance, i.e. there is no free seating area at the venue. If you are lucky enough to live in Higashimatsuyama City, this month you can apply for a special free ‘invitation’ ticket. General tickets will go on sale on June 20th 2024 from 10 am.

Higashimatsuyama Fireworks 2024

The 25th annual Higashimatsuyama Fireworks will light the night skies this August. The last fireworks were on in 2019 and were the 20th occurrence. I find it very interesting that many places in Japan count the years that an event was cancelled as an ‘occurrence’! Hence, even though there were no fireworks between 2020 and 2023 they count them as the 21st, 22nd, 23rd and 24th! I digress!

Higashimatsuyama did have their summer festival last year for the first time in four years. So it was a surprise they didn’t opt to have their fireworks. Regardless, its great to see them back this year. They will be on Saturday August 17th, from 7 pm, weather permitting. It is relatively large fireworks display. They launch approximately 5000 fireworks, including shakudama and starmines, set to music. They are launched at Tokigawa Riverside Park (Takasaka). Before the pandemic, about 60,000 people come to enjoy the firework display held close to Peony Walk annually.

As aforementioned, this year you have to purchase a ticket in advance to watch the fireworks at the venue. This is the first time there is no free seating at venue. Unfortunately, this has become quite common since the pandemic. Kawagoe started the trend in 2022 when they also only had seats for people who bought a ticket in advance. Ironically, Kawagoe will have a free seating area this year! There are still some other places you can still watch fireworks for free from the venue. Such as the Guinness World Record Konosu fireworks in autumn.

Invitation ticket for Higashimatsuyama Residents

The tickets for the general public will go on sale on June 20th 2024 at 10 am, but for anyone who lives in Higashimatsuyama you can apply in advance for a free ‘invitation’ ticket. However, they only have 70 free tickets for residents, so they will operate it as a lottery. You need to apply by postcard or by an online form between May 7th and 24th. They will notify lucky applicants after May 30th. If you are unsuccessful, you will have to wait for general sales to open to purchase a ticket for the event.
