Hanami BBQ at Shinrin and Iwatsuki Castle Park Cherry Blossom festival

For the first time in three years, Iwatsuki Castle Park will have a cherry blossom festival in 2022. However, it is nothing like a usual year, with less events and entertainment. But they will have light up (all things being equal). Something is better than nothing, right!? There will be no food or drink sold, unlike a usual year, and they request that you respect the “three C’s” when visiting the park.

Iwatsuki Castle Park Cherry Blossom Season 2022

Normally the festival is held on the first weekend in April. In 2021, it was also scheduled for the first weekend in April, but subsequently cancelled due to the pandemic. As it turns out, that date would have been too late as the cherry blossoms opened early in 2021. Moreover, they are forecasted to open early this year, 2022, too. Therefore, the park has set the festival period for March 24th to 31st. So a full week this year, as opposed to the usual two day festival.

Update March 26th 2022: various weather websites are reporting that the cherry blossoms at Iwatsuki Park have started to bloom.

Cherry blossoms

From the Saitama Tourism and International Relations Bureau

There are about 600 cherry blossoms at Iwatsuki Castle Park. When there is a “normal” festival on, not a festival lite as it is in 2022, there is usually a flea and farmers market, and about 20 festival stalls. There will be no food or drink sold at the park this year on account of the pandemic.

They normally light up the cherry blossoms at night too. But great news for 2022: they are currently planning to light up the cherry blossoms from 6 to 9 pm for the week of the festival.

☔Even in a “usual” year, there are likely to be changes to the line up in the event of rain.
