ice skating natural ice rink Tokigawa

Natural Outdoor Ice Rink, Tokigawa. At one point it looked like Tokigawa town wouldn’t be opening the Kasa Skate rink in the winter of 2022. But then around the middle of December, they tweeted to say that they would open after all. And they started the rink preparation then. On December 28th 2021 they announced on the town website that the rink would open from December 30th 2021. It is the first time in three years that this popular natural ice rink has been able to open to the public.

In winter 2019 ~ 2020, the ice rink was not opened to the public due to damage from typhoon Hagibis in the Autumn of 2019. It is probably just as well too, as it was a warmer than normal winter and the chances are the ice never formed. Several other events in Saitama were cancelled in January 2020 due to the warmer than normal weather. Including the three icicles of Chichibu.  In 2021 it couldn’t open to the public on account of the Coronavirus.

Kasa Natural Outdoor Ice Rink

This is the only natural outdoor ice rink I know of in Saitama. Local volunteers band together to turn the natural ice pool into a suitable skate rink. However, as it is natural ice, they advise extra precaution. You can borrow skates, guards and helmets at the reception for the rink. They sell cup noodles there and provide boiling water (self service).

The town of Tokigawa don’t release the expected opening date of the ice rink until very near the time. They have to watch the conditions and situation at the lake. There have been times the rink has opened as early as Christmas, but more often than not it is around the 1st of January. For the winter season 2022, they opened yesterday, Thursday December 30th. More on the dates and hours below the photo.

Tokigawa Natural Ice Rink Season and Hours

The earliest I remember the rink starting was Christmas eve 2017. At the time, the Tokigawa government wrote on their website : “A Christmas present from Russian Winter”「冬将軍からのクリスマスプレゼント」. The closing date is also only decided close to the time: dependent on the condition of the rink. The rink stays in business as long as the ice is frozen. It normally begins to thaw in early February. However, in 2022 they predicted the season would probably last until late February. However, due to the snow on February 10th, they tweeted on public holiday February 11th to say the rink would not open on the 11th. Moreover, they decided to end the 2022 season.

From December 30th to January 9th it is open daily, but after January 9th it only opens on Saturdays and Sundays. The rinks hours are from 9 am to 4 pm weekends and holidays only. As it is a natural rink, there are times when the conditions of the rink aren’t good enough for skating. They recommend you check their twitter account on the day you hope to visit for the latest information.
