Fireworks bursting in the sky as the cover photo for the 2022 Kawaguchi Fireworks event information

The first ever Kawaguchi fireworks took place in May 2019. However, in 2020 they decided to hold the fireworks in Autumn. It was actually nothing to do with the pandemic at the time that they decided to change the date, but actually due to the Olympics and due to damage from typhoon Hagibis the previous year. They were scheduled for October 3rd 2020, but in early September with less than a month to go, they postponed the fireworks. This time it was due to the pandemic.

Kawaguchi Fireworks

The new date was finally released in July of this year, 2022. The 2nd ever Kawaguchi Fireworks are on Saturday November 5th, weather permitting, from 6.30 pm to 7.30 pm. At the first ever fireworks, in 2019, they launched approximately 7,000 fireworks. This year they will launch 9,400 fireworks.

This year’s fireworks are in aid of children’s orphanages. They are bringing 100 children from orphanages to the fireworks on the night. Furthermore, they worked with orphans to choose the opening music of the fireworks. They will be crowdfunding for five days around November 5th. According to the website (see information section), more information will be released in due course.

The event is organised by the Kawaguchi Chamber of Commerce and Industry with support from the Kawaguchi Tourist board. Although they say the 2019 fireworks were the first ever and these are the second ever, in one way they actually aren’t! Reportedly, the area had a tradition of summer firework displays between 1952 and 1959. Sixty years later they revived the tradition.

In 2019 there were food stalls and other attractions on the day. Still awaiting information for 2022. There is only one general viewing area this year. They say the seats are limited and that there is a possibility of restrictions if the area is full. The seating area is located west of the reserved seating area. For people who have a ticket for the reserved area, you can enter from 4 pm. However, you can’t access the general viewing (free) area until 5 pm according to the official website.
