Kisai Hydrangea festival

For the third year in a row, the Kisai Hydrangea Festival will be celebrated at Tamashiki Shrine park. Before the pandemic, this festival was held on hydrangea road. The Tamashiki Shrine is a stunning location, but the rickshaw on hydrangea road with the castle in the background was thee shot for this festival until they changed the location! You can of course still see the hydrangea on Hydrangea Road backdropped by the castle. Its about a 20 minute walk from the (relatively) new venue at Tamashiki Park.

Kisai Hydrangea Festival 2024

There are several places you can see hydrangea in Kazo City. But the Kisai area is particularly renowned for its hydrangea. Within the Kisai area there are three main hydrangea spots. One of which is Tamashiki Shrine Park, which will host the Kisai hydrangea festival in 2024. (Information for the other two here). The “hydrangea festival” period is considered to be the month of June, but there is only an actual proper festival on one day. In 2024, that will be Sunday June 9th (all things equal), from 10 am to 3 pm.

The Kisai Hydrangea festival is quite a small festival, relatively speaking. But there are some fun elements, such as a rickshaw ride along the 400 meter hydrangea way. However, since 2022 the rickshaw ride is at Tamashiki Park, not hydrangea way. But other than that, in 2024, the festival is similar to how it was pre-pandemic.

Although the main site of the festival is Tamashiki shrine, they may well mark the festival at Kisai Castle too, as they did in 2022. They opened the museum in the castle and were showcasing a special exhibition. They also had a taiko drum performance in front of the castle. Of the three main hydrangea spots in the Kisai area, hydrangea way, at the side of Kisai Castle is particularly scenic. More photos and information here.

Even more hydrangea in Saitama Prefecture.

Editor’s note: this event post was temporarily merged with the Kisai area hydrangea information post during the pandemic, as hydrangea way was completely blocked off in 2020 to prevent people from visiting the area. The festival was also cancelled in 2021. Although, it was on in 2022, there were conditions to attendance. Last update May 20th 2024.
