Kumagaya Air Base Summer festival

An Air Base Summer Festival in Kumagaya City, Saitama Prefecture, Japan.

The Japan Air Self Defence Force celebrated their 70th anniversary earlier this month, on July 1st. Saitama Prefecture is home to two of the Air Forces bases. This one in Kumagaya and another, probably the most well known, in Iruma. Both air bases open their gates to the general public a handful of times a year. At Kumagaya Air Base one of those times is for their excellent cherry blossom festival. Another is for this, their summer festival – with fireworks.

An Air Base Summer Festival

I have not been to the summer festival. Unfortunately, I was not built for Japanese summer! So we are rarely here during the hottest month of the year – August – and that is when this festival is on. However, its on the end of August, so its actually slightly cooler at night at that stage. Just like the Iruma Air Base Summer Festival and the Asaka Ground forces Summer Festival (which are both on in July), the Kumagaya Air Base summer festival is always on a weekday. In 2024 that is Thursday August 29th. The festival is on from 4 pm to 7.30 pm. They launch the fireworks between 7 pm and 7.15 pm. A great way to end the summer.

Please note there are a lot of rules you must follow, understandably, when visiting a Japan Self Defence Forces Base. For example, no drones are permitted. Pets are also not allowed, but guide dogs usually are. You are not allowed bring alcohol or anything resembling a weapon onto the grounds of the base. The base reserves the right to remove people from the premises if they are not following the rules.
