The Minami Koshigaya Awa Odori Festival maybe entertaining the masses again, for the first time in 3 years, in 2022. However, it is completely different to “normal”. Also, please note that in 2021 it was also scheduled to go ahead and all looked very promising right up until July 9th. On July 9th they announced they were postponing the festival. Essentially they cancelled it. As I update this midsummer 2022, the event is still scheduled. Hopefully that means it will go ahead. However, it is not an outdoor festival this year, but an indoor stage show.
※Moreover, you need to apply to attend the show, by August 5th 2022.
Minami Koshigaya Awa Odori Festival
In a normal year: With its proximity to Tokyo this festival normally attracts around 70,000 spectators. There are approximately 6,500 dancers, in a regular year, who perform the traditional Awa dance. Furthermore, apart from the performances, you can also enjoy festival booths. In 2022: they have turned this lively festival into an indoor stage show!
Dates: The festival is usually scheduled for three days in late August. Normally, on the Friday the festival starts at 7 pm. On Saturday and Sunday it begins at 2 pm. Each day it finishes up around 9 pm. However, in 2022, they will not have the Friday evening event and the festival will only be on two days. They are Saturday August 27th and Sunday August 28th.
Location: Moreover, the festival is not held on the streets of Minami Koshigaya, but in Koshigaya Sun City Hall! And you need to apply in advance to attend the show! The deadline for application is August 5th. You can apply here.
Times: As this year it is a stage show, there are set times. There will be three shows each day. On Saturday August 27th that first showing is 1 to 3.30 pm, the second at 4.10 to 6.10 pm and the last at 6.50 to 8.50 pm. On Sunday the showings are also two hours each, the first is from 12.30 pm, the second from 3.10 pm and the last from 5.50 pm.
