Saitama Covid-19 2020

Saitama Covid-19 updates for August 2020 will be added to this post as they become available. The previous Coronavirus post was starting to lag because it had close to 10,000 words. There were 81 inpatients on July 1st, that figure was 243 on July 29th. The increase is actually below the national average. Nationwide the number of Covid-19 patients in hospital was five times higher on July 29th than July 1st.

17:43 ~ Kawaguchi have confirmed the tenth case in the police department since July 18th. The man confirmed today is a police officer in his forties who works with other previously confirmed cases.

17:20 ~ The prefecture announced that among yesterday‘s confirmed patients, two are students of a Prefectural High School.

Messsage from Governor Ono today, August 4th.

Monday August 3rd

19:03 ~ 49 cases have been confirmed in Saitama Prefecture today, Monday August 3rd 2020. Kawagoe confirmed 2 cases, Kawaguchi 3 cases and between Koshigaya, Saitama City and the prefecture 44 cases were confirmed.

The numbers by area don’t add up today. The prefecture said a total of 49 were confirmed in Saitama today, but when you add them up by city and town it is 65???? Giving them the benefit of the doubt, especially with yesterday being a Sunday (when there is limited staff) I assume the discrepancy is that the additional figures in the town / city break down are from the weekend when the town / city figures were short.

By area

  • Saitama City – 8 cases
  • Kawaguchi – 4 cases
  • Tokorozawa – 25 cases
  • Koshigaya – 4
  • Asaka – 4
  • Tsurugashima – 3
  • Kawagoe – 2

  • Wako – 1
  • Fujimi – 1
  • Yashio – 1
  • Konosu – 1
  • Chichibu – 1
  • Kazo – 1
  • Gyoda – 1
  • Moroyama -1

Tokorozawa Cluster

A cluster has been found at the Tokorozawa Daiichi Hospital. 25 cases in total were confirmed on August 3rd of which 15 are patients. The other 10 are hospital staff including nurses. In July a patient was confirmed with the virus after he had been admitted to hospital. It is suspected this is how the cluster arose. They are currently tracing contacts of all confirmed cases. Currently, 68 people are awaiting test results.

Also of note in Tokorozawa is that one of the cases confirmed yesterday is a Hoikuen teacher. They are tracing contacts at the moment.

The Yaoko Cluster

A friend very kindly drew my attention to a “cluster” among the Yaoko supermarkets. Over the last three days Yaoko have announced new cases among their branches in Saitama. A total of at least 6 cases* have been found in Saitama branches of Yaoko (plus one in Tokyo) in just three days.

*(I initially wrote 8 but 2 – 1 at Sakado and 1 at Iruma – haven’t been confirmed yet. That is why I have 1(+) for those two locations below)

  • August 1st: Tsukinowa Station branch Namegawa – 1 case. The branch is temporarily closed for disinfecting until August 5th.
  • August 1st: Sakado Chiyoda branch – 1(+) case(s). The branch is temporarily closed for disinfecting until tomorrow morning.
  • August 1st: Kami Fukuoka branch – 1 case. The branch is temporarily closed for disinfecting.
  • August 1st: Iruma Shimofujizawa branch – 1(+) case(s). The branch is temporarily closed for disinfecting.
  • August 2nd: Soka Matsubara branch – 1 case within staff, but there has also been a customer identified separately.
  • August 2nd: Omiya Shimacho branch – 1 case.
  • TOKYO: August 3rd a staff member in the Higashiyamato branch of Yaoko in Tokyo also tested positive.

Other:

Both the Kawagoe cases are men – one in his 20s and one in his 40s. Both were going to work by train even on the day they got their fever. One of the cases does not have a cough, which has been quite common in Kawagoe cases. (Kawagoe gives detailed information promptly unlike the other principal cities). People complain of a sore throat and high fever between 37.7 and 38 degrees, but no cough and no other symptoms.

August 2nd

A total of 74 cases were confirmed in Saitama Prefecture on Sunday the 2nd of August. It is exactly the same total figure as August 1st, but the figures by city / town are different.

  1. here you may have heard it’s been a real spike we had over 700 the other day and thats with stage 3 lockdown. we are looking at further lockdown measures in the next few days. Meanwhile outside Victoria things are slowly returning to normal.

    1. I’ve been watching the figures for Victoria. So unfortunate after doing so well. It seems to take a while for the lock down to take effect. Please God you’ll see a difference – for the better – within a week or two. Stay safe
