Information for the Sakae Cherry Blossom festival in Niiza, beside Nerima Tokyo, which is on in 2024 for the first time in five years. In addition, this post contains information for the ‘Forest Jam Sakae festival’, which is on the first weekend of the larger Sakae Cherry Blossom festival. It is a very lively festival with lots of traditional Japanese elements, even a mikoshi (portable shrine)! The Sakae Green Road is particularly well known for yozakura – cherry blossoms at night. The sakura are lit at night by beautiful ‘bonbori’ lanterns.

Sakae Green Road / Sakae Cherry Blossom Festival

Niiza city don’t actually call this the “Sakae Cherry Blossom Festival” on their website. Just the ‘open period of the Sakae Green Road’. But locals seem to refer to it as the Sakae Cherry Blossom Festival. In 2024 it is on, for the first time in five years, from Friday March 15th to Sunday April 7th. It marks the period that the lanterns are up. And they are lit between 5.30 pm and 11 pm. On the Saturday and Sunday of the first weekend of the period, there is a more traditional type festival called the Forest Jam Sakae Festival.

Forest Jam Sakae Cherry Blossom Festival 2024

This is a really lively festival with lots of elements, including a mikoshi! A mikoshi is a portable shrine and while it is very common to see them in summer, its quite rare to see them in spring. Even rarer to see them at a cherry blossom festival. You can also enjoy live performances at this festival, including taiko drum performances. In addition, there is traditional dance such as yosakoi. There is also a market both days and the sakura trees will be lit up at night. Although, I am not sure how much, if any, open blossoms they have!
