22 places to meet Santa in Japan 2022

More than 22 places you can meet Santa Claus in Tokyo and surrounding areas in 2022. There are 22 on the 2022 list and then further suggestions within the post. In order to get the post out in a timely fashion, several of the locations just have the pertinent details listed. Update December 12th: a couple more added as “bonus” content.

⚠This is the 2022 list. The 2023 list🔗 for December 23rd to 25th.⚠

Santa Claus arrived into Narita Airport on December 3rd. This is the first time in three years that he has been here on a public visit. He did come privately in 2021 and visited a handful of places around the Kanto Plain (Greater Tokyo area). This year, as he is here in an official capacity, he has a lot more visits scheduled than in 2021. However, even though the situation with the pandemic has improved, things are still not quite back to normal. As such, in 2022 Santa Claus will still not be able to visit as many places as he did before the pandemic. Moreover, he requests you wear a mask and respect social distancing.

Places you can meet Santa Claus in 2022

This article contains a selection of twenty places you can meet and greet Santa in 2022 and / or get your photo taken with him, around the Kanto Plain. Below the main twenty, there are also further suggestions of how to meet or see Santa Claus this year. The Kanto Plain / Greater Tokyo area incorporates Tokyo, Saitama, Chiba, Kanagawa, Gunma, Ibaraki and Tochigi. However, I was not able to find a Santa Claus meet and greet in Gunma in 2022, in time for this post.

For those who are new to this blog and / or new to Japan, please note that Santa visits in Japan are very different to how it is done in many other countries. For one, Santa Claus rarely gives a present in Japan. When he does, it is generally just a candy! There are some places, generally hotels or campsites, where you can organize for Santa to give your child a present, but you need to bring it yourself. The only place we’ve ever received a present for free from Santa is Santa Hills. It is just a small present, but a very nice one. Another difference is that generally Santa isn’t in a grotto, just in front of a tree, or even more randomly, walking around a mall! There are exceptions, which are outlined in this list below.

Santa Claus will be visiting some, but unfortunately not all, of his regular spots in Tokyo this Christmas. However, some of them required advanced booking and are already sold out. For example, Matsuya Ginza which always has a professional photographer on hand (for a nominal fee) to capture that special Santa photo. He will visit there on December 10th, but the tickets were sold out within hours of going online. However, there are several places that don’t require advance booking, including:

There are two ways you can meet him – 1) participate in a parade with him, 2) get your photo taken with him. There are three different time schedules for the latter. Meanwhile, there is one parade at 6 pm each of the four days. In addition, on both the 17th and Christmas Day a marching band will participate in the parade.

Santa Claus will also visit Benibana Walk in Okegawa on Christmas Eve.

In addition, Santa Claus will also visit the Atre Oimachi branch and the Atre Omori branch on the same day, December 17th. However, the latter (Atre Omori) requires advance booking. In Shizuoka prefecture you can visit Father Christmas at the Aeon Hamamatsu. Meanwhile in Nagoya Takashimaya will have a Santa Claus visit. I have no doubt that Santa Claus will also visit other locations in the Greater Tokyo area and around Japan, but the organizers just haven’t shared the information publicly yet. Keep an eye out for news from your local mall!

The safest way to ensure a Santa visit is to stay in a hotel or campsite with the service. There are plenty of places around the Kanto plain that offer a Santa visit to guests of their accommodation. For example, the real Santa visits Moose Family Camp Resort a couple of times during the season. At Santa Hills it is Christmas all year round, but Santa comes to visit guests of the resort during the month of December. Most of the large four + star hotels in Tokyo also have a Santa visit during the season. For example, the Hotel New Otani have always been great for Santa events. It is much easier to find a hotel with a Santa visit included than it is to find a free public Santa. It is such a magical event for children… I really hope you get to visit Santa this year. Merry Christmas.

Added on December 12th after the post was initially published on December 8th, for my own records. Santa Claus visited Ease Village in Meguro between December 9th and 11th. It cost 2000 yen.
