Information for the Shobu Summer Festival, a Tennosama festival, in 2023.

Shobu Tennosama / Summer Festival

Shobu is an area in Kuki City, known for its iris (shobu is the Japanese for iris) and its lavender. This summer festival, a “Tennosama” festival is held on the second Sunday of July each year. This year it falls on Sunday July 9th, three days before the mammoth, infamous Kuki Lantern Festival. There is also a lantern float at Shobu’s summer festival.

The Shobu Tennosama festival is the festival of Shobu shrine, which is a shrine that is known for its wisteria. The town is colored with “mikoshi” and festival floats that they parade through the town. There are also live stage performances, including kids dance and taiko drums.

Access

You can get a bus to Shobu Shrine from Utsunomiya Line Kuki Station’s west exit. The bus takes about 15 minutes. They request that you come by public transport, where possible. There will be disruption to traffic during the period of the festival as some of the streets are pedestrianized for the occasion.
