Three children playing with a sky lantern at an event in Kawajima Town, Saitama Prefecture

Due to the success of the sky lantern night for Kawajima Town’s 50th anniversary in 2022, the town will once again host a sky lantern night x Halloween event in 2023. Last year the lanterns sold out in hours, as it was a first come first served system. But this year, there are three times more lanterns available and purchasers will be selected by lottery. However, they are much more expensive in 2023 at 3500 yen per lantern. You can apply in advance to purchase one now and they will chose 350 lucky candidates by lottery after September 20th. The event is held in Heisei no Mori Park, home to the longest rose tunnel in Japan. It is Autumn rose season at the time and cosmos usually bloom in a neighboring field at that time of year too.

Sky Lantern Event

Sky lantern events have grown in popularity in Saitama in the last three years. Last year there is not just one, but three sky lantern events for Halloween in Saitama Prefecture! This one is in the rural town of Kawajima, which is famous locally for several things such as sutatte udon, ichijuku, swans and Japan’s longest rose tunnel. The lantern event will be held in the park which is home to that rose tunnel. And there should be some Autumn roses blooming on the day (no guarantees – it depends on Mother Nature)!

The Lanterns are LED so there is no flame used. In addition, they come with a long string, like what you have on a kite, so they don’t pollute the air. Furthermore, you can bring them home, but the light doesn’t last more than a few hours. It costs 3500 yen for one lantern and there is a limit of 300 lanterns. They will be allocated by lottery. You can apply to be put into the lottery between September 4th and September 20th 2023. Use the QR code on the flyer above or the link in the information section.

Apart from the lanterns, there is also a Halloween event so people can come in costume. If you come in costume you can participate in a ‘cosplay fashion show’. In addition, there are other stage events. There are also kitchen cars (food vans). Furthermore, they will have a karaoke competition with cash prizes. They usually have some events for children such as goldfish scoop and hoop rings.

However, you can take a bus from the East exit of Tobu Tojo line Kawagoe station, bound for Konosu. The park is about a 20 minute walk from 「川島農協前」(Kawajima Nokyou mae) bus stop. There is also an infrequent bus from Wakaba Station.

By car – the park is about a five to ten minute drive from the Kawajima exit of the Ken-O expressway. There is parking in the community center and the town hall beside the park as well as temporary parking lots nearby.
