This February Saitama will have a large strawberry festival, backed and supported by the prefectural Government. The festival is on in the Keyaki Hiroba of Tamaari town (Saitama Shintoshin) in Saitama City. Try some of Saitama’s own brand strawberries, including the award winning Amarin variety, at this two day strawberry fair near Tokyo. Hang around until after dusk to see some beautiful illumination at the venue and in neighboring Cocoon City too!
Saitama Strawberry Festival 2024
The Saitama Strawberry Festival serves to introduce three of Saitama’s original strawberry varieties – Amarin, Kaorin and Benitama. Amarin won the first national strawberry championship last year! At the festival they will sell Saitama strawberries as well as desserts, drinks and food made from Saitama strawberries. It doesn’t say it on the event post, but at the press conference (see next paragraph) in January Governor Ono also mentioned that they intend to have information for Saitama’s strawberry picking farms at the festival too. According to Governor Ono there are 96 tourist strawberry farms in Saitama Prefecture. I’ve more than a third of them on this website! In no particular order:
- Ten easy access strawberry picking farms in Saitama
- Ten strawberry picking farms in Western Saitama
- Strawberry picking farms in Yoshimi, which according to the prefecture is #1 for strawberries
- Ten strawberry picking farms in Chichibu and Northern Saitama
- Picking farm in Sakado
- Picking farm in Konosu
There was a press conference earlier this year, in January when the Governor Ono went through several of the projects they are undertaking this year to promote Saitama strawberries and strawberry picking. I took as many notes as I could, but it was a lot of information! One of the more prominent campaigns you may have noticed on Instagram. There are also special day trips incorporating visits to strawberry farms. As well as other strawberry events this winter. For example, there are collaborations with cafes and hotels for strawberry desserts until February 29th. In addition, there will be a strawberry fair at Omiya station from February 16th to 19th.
Shortly after the Saitama Strawberry Festival there is another food event at Saitama Shintoshin, one not to miss if you like sweet potatoes! Japan’s largest sweet potato expo starts on February 20th…
