Camp Asaka Summer Festival

Camp Asaka is a Japan Ground Self Defence Forces base that straddles Nerima in Tokyo and Wako, Asaka and Niiza cities in Saitama Prefecture. This summer festival, with fireworks, is on in Niiza City reportedly. However, the entrances are the Asaka and Wako gates in Saitama Prefecture or the Oizumi Gate in Nerima, Tokyo. The Asaka gate is also where the excellent Army Museum is. Update July 17th 2024 – they are postponing the festival until tomorrow, July 18th, due to expected bad weather today.

Camp Asaka Summer Festival & Fireworks

Just like the summer festival at the base in Iruma, an air base, this festival is usually on a weekday. Moreover, its usually on the 17th of July. Which is the case in 2024. It will be on Wednesday July 17th, Thursday July 18th (due to bad weather on the 17th) from 4.45 pm to 9 pm. Last entry to the base is at 8 pm. They have festival stalls, live music, bon odori (festival dance) and a children’s corner. They launch the fireworks around 7.45 pm.

This is a rare chance to enter a self defence forces base, but naturally exactly because it is a military establishment, there are many rules you must follow. For example, no vehicles are allowed on to the base. In addition, no pets are allowed except for guide dogs. Moreover, they inspect your handbag / hand luggage at the gate.
